NFL introduces innovative virtual measurement system during Hall of Fame Game, eliminating the need for chains
The NFL debuted a new virtual measurement system using Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology during the Hall of Fame Game. This technology replaces the traditional chain system to measure the line to gain, making the process faster and more efficient. The NFL stated that the virtual measurement system will provide more accurate measurements and eliminate controversial rulings. The system uses six 8K cameras to track the position of the ball and will be operated from the league headquarters in New York. While the chain gang remains as a backup option, the new technology will be a regular part of the viewing experience starting in the 2025 season.
