NFL owners approve massive revamp to kickoff

NFL owners greenlight substantial kickoff overhaul

NFL owners have approved a revamp of the kickoff play, adopting a format from the XFL in an effort to make the play more exciting and reduce concussions. The new rules will see the majority of the players on the kicking and return teams lined up farther downfield, with touchbacks marked at the 30-yard line and no fair catches allowed. The change aims to increase the return rate, which hit a record low in 2023. Special teams coaches are hopeful for an 80% return rate in 2024. Other rule changes include prohibiting a tackle technique and allowing teams a third challenge after one successful challenge.
