Cowboys Release Joe Milton III, Announce Sam Howell as Backup QB
The Dallas Cowboys named Sam Howell as the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott, waiving Joe Milton III to make space for running back Emari Demercado, acquired from the Chiefs. Milton had a strong preseason but the Cowboys engaged in trade talks before his release. Howell, with more experience from previous starts with the Washington Commanders, signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal. Coach Brian Schottenheimer noted the competition between Milton and Howell remains fluid. If Howell were cut, the Cowboys would still be liable for his salary, which complicates roster decisions. Milton could return to the practice squad if unclaimed.
