Raiders Set to Name Kirk Cousins Week 1 Starter, Surpassing No. 1 Pick Fernando Mendoza
The Las Vegas Raiders have named Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2026 season, according to CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz. First-year coach Klint Kubiak will have Cousins lead the team, while No. 1 overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza will serve as his backup. Kubiak, who prefers developing quarterbacks by having them learn behind seasoned players, allowed Mendoza the opportunity to compete but ultimately felt Cousins’ preseason performance warranted the starting role.
