After Gregg Popovich, Mike Tomlin becomes the longest-tenured current US major professional coach
Gregg Popovich stepped down as coach of the San Antonio Spurs after nearly 29 years. Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers now holds the longest tenure as a coach in one place among major pro sports leagues. During Popovich’s time as coach, there were 303 coaching changes in the NBA. Popovich holds the record for most coaching victories with one team, all 1,422 wins with the Spurs. Spoelstra is close to joining this club with the Miami Heat. Popovich had winning records against 20 out of 24 coaches he faced at least 30 times. The Spurs used 222 players during his tenure.
