Hospital confirms several Chiefs fans required amputations following frigid playoff game
During a near-record cold Kansas City Chiefs playoff game in January, dozens of attendees suffered frostbite, with twelve individuals requiring amputations, mostly of fingers and toes. The University of Kansas hospital also treated frostbite victims from the game but did not report any amputations. The game had a temperature of minus-4F and a windchill of minus-27F, breaking the stadium’s record for coldest game. The frigid weather led to the postponement of another game due to a blizzard. Fans were allowed to bring heated blankets and cardboard into the stadium to combat the extreme cold. Frostbite can occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin, especially with windchill. The coldest game in NFL history remains the Ice Bowl in 1967.
