Sources: Chiefs, guard Smith reach historic deal

Chiefs and guard Smith agree on groundbreaking financial agreement

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid interior lineman in NFL history with $70 million guaranteed. The team prevented Smith from reaching free agency with a franchise tag in February. This offseason, the Chiefs revamped their offensive line to support quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and retaining Smith was a key part of this strategy. Smith, a first-time Pro-Bowler, has been a reliable player despite concerns about his medical history. The Chiefs also traded left guard Joe Thuney to create salary-cap space, with the NFL’s cap higher than anticipated at $279.2 million.
