Report: No immediate plans for NFL to transition to 18-game schedule; negotiations delayed
The NFL and NFL Players Association are not expected to start formal negotiations until at least early 2026 to expand the regular season to 18 games. Discussions about the 18-game schedule have been ongoing, but formal negotiations have not yet taken place. The league just moved to a 17-game season in 2021, and talks of expanding to 18 games have been met with concerns about player safety and logistical challenges. If negotiations for an 18-game season do not start until 2026, the league may not see the change until 2028. Key issues to be discussed will include player safety and scheduling logistics.
