Loss of power led to Super Bowl winner Russ Francis’s fatal plane crash

Fatal plane crash of Super Bowl winner Russ Francis attributed to loss of power

Former NFL tight end Russ Francis and another man were killed in a plane crash in New York state after the craft’s engine lost power, according to a federal investigator. Francis, 70, and Richard McSpadden, 63, had taken off from Lake Placid Airport in a single-engine Cessna 177 when the plane encountered trouble. The plane attempted to turn back to the airport but hit a berm at the end of the runway and fell into a ravine. Francis, a veteran pilot, played in the NFL for the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers before retiring.
