Josh McDaniels: Our plan was always to go with three QBs

Josh McDaniels: Our original intention was to employ three quarterbacks

Raiders rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell performed impressively in the preseason, leading some to speculate that he had surpassed veteran Brian Hoyer as the backup to Jimmy Garoppolo. However, based on the team’s initial 53-man roster, both Hoyer and O’Connell have remained on the roster. Head coach Josh McDaniels explained that the plan was to have three quarterbacks on the roster because they believed all three were capable of being roster players. With the new rule allowing for a designated emergency third quarterback on the roster, it makes sense for Las Vegas to keep all three. While Hoyer and O’Connell will both need to be ready on game day, it is likely that Hoyer will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in game situations.
