On this day in 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay college student, was beaten and left tied to a fencepost in Wyoming, eventually dying five days later. The first moving assembly line began operation in 1913 at Ford. In 1985, Palestinian gunmen hijacked the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro and killed a Jewish American tourist. In 2001, the war in Afghanistan started after the US and Britain launched air attacks following the Sept. 11 attacks. In 2003, California voters recalled Gov.
