Blocked field goals, 70-yard threats and chaotic kickoffs, the foot is back in football

Field goals being blocked, kickoffs causing chaos and threats of 70-yard plays are making the foot more important in football again.

Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, watched as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked a 65-yard field goal, one of the longest in NFL history. He credited the league’s new rules for kickers, which allow teams to prepare their own kicking balls, for changing the kicking game significantly. These changes have led to more action and more strategy in special teams play, with kickers being able to hit longer field goals and kickoffs staying in play more often. As a result, teams are scoring more points and the outcome of games is being influenced more heavily by special teams play.
