NFL players debut rugby-style scrum caps for added protection
Several NFL players wore helmets with extra padding, called ‘Guardian Caps’, in games for the first time on Sunday as a move to prevent future concussions. The caps have been used in practices since 2022 and were allowed for pre-season games. A small number of players chose to wear the modified helmets in games, after the NFL approved the move. The caps attach to the helmet, providing an extra layer of padding and reducing collision impact by 33%. Players like Jabril Peppers and Josh Whyle opted for the Guardian Caps due to previous concussion concerns. The NFL has taken steps to address head injuries following a lawsuit by former players in 2013.
