NFL told to shell out $4.7 billion in ‘Sunday Ticket’ lawsuit
A jury in U.S. District Court ordered the NFL to pay over $4.7 billion in damages for violating antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday games on a premium subscription service. The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses who paid for the package of out-of-market games from 2011 through 2022. The NFL plans to appeal the verdict, claiming their distribution strategy is fan-friendly. Post-trial motions will be heard, with potential appeals to the Ninth Circuit Court. Other sports leagues are also watching the case since they offer similar packages. The lawsuit was originally filed in 2015 and reinstated in 2019.
