Avellini, former Bears quarterback and teammate of Payton, passes away
Former Chicago Bears quarterback Bob Avellini passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with cancer. Avellini played alongside Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton in 1977, leading the Bears to their first playoff appearance in 14 years. That season, Avellini threw 11 touchdown passes and had a career-high 2,004 yards, while Payton rushed for over 1,800 yards and 14 touchdowns. Avellini spent nine seasons with the Bears, throwing for 7,111 yards with 33 touchdowns and 69 interceptions in 73 games. The team described Avellini as a fierce and tough competitor who will be missed.
