Chargers release WR Williams, save $20M on cap

Chargers cut ties with WR Williams, freeing up $20 million in cap space

The Los Angeles Chargers released wide receiver Mike Williams to save $20 million in salary cap space, with Khalil Mack agreeing to restructure his deal to stay with the team. Williams, originally a No. 7 pick in the 2017 NFL draft, has been plagued by injuries in the past two seasons, including a back fracture and torn ACL. Meanwhile, Mack, a former Defensive Player of the Year, had a career-high 17 sacks last season. The Chargers traded for Mack two seasons ago and he hopes to win a Super Bowl under new coach Jim Harbaugh.
