Committee: NFL injuries similar across surfaces

Committee finds NFL injuries similar regardless of playing surface

ESPN staff writers Kevin Seifert and Dan Graziano reported that the NFL’s rate of noncontact lower-extremity injuries was nearly the same on synthetic and natural turf in 2023, according to data from an NFL/NFLPA committee. The committee’s findings informed the debate over the safety of playing surfaces at NFL stadiums, particularly following criticism after injuries occurred on MetLife Stadium’s synthetic turf. The committee is conducting research initiatives to address surface conditions, and their data showed a decrease in serious injuries and lower-extremity injuries in the 2023 season. The NFL also saw a reduction in ACL injuries and concussion numbers, achieved their goal of reducing concussions on kickoffs, and plans to examine the kickoff play again with the goal of keeping it in the game while making it safer.
