Francis Beall Ryan, a former pro football player for the Cleveland Browns, passed away at the age of 87 after a successful and varied career after sports. Ryan had achieved notable successes as a mathematician and technology consultant, making significant contributions to electronic voting technology and holding academic positions at Case Western Reserve University and Yale University. Additionally, he was awarded a doctorate in mathematics from Rice University while playing for the Browns. After retiring from football in 1970, Ryan went on to bring gainful conversations around head trauma and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) within contact sports.
