NFL considers banning hip-drop tackles

NFL contemplates prohibiting hip-drop tackles

The NFL is considering banning the hip-drop tackle due to its high risk of injury. NFL executive Jeff Miller stated that the hip-drop tackle increases the risk of injury by 25 times compared to a standard tackle. The tackle gained attention in the 2022 postseason when several players, including Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Cowboys running back Tony Pollard, were injured by hip-drop tackles. Despite the injuries caused by this tackle, no proposals were made to ban it during the offseason as it is difficult to define and enforce consistently. The league plans to further study the tackle to find ways to regulate it.
