Chiefs Probably Unable to Use Franchise Tag on Jones, Sources Say
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is set to make his season debut on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Chiefs’ revised agreement with Jones does not prevent them from using the franchise tag on him in the future. Nevertheless, the team’s salary cap situation in 2024 is expected to hinder their ability to tag Jones. Therefore, Jones is highly likely to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024. Despite his offseason holdout, the Chiefs and Jones have a good relationship, and a return to Kansas City is not out of the question. The Chiefs plan to use Jones on passing downs and important defensive plays and have added incentives to his contract to boost his earnings.
