Insider suggests Cardinals could move on from two-time Pro Bowler

Next season could be a tipping point for Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and determine his future in Arizona.

Dan Graziano of ESPN listed Murray as one of the league’s most intriguing players in 2023 because his potential outcomes vary wildly.
“He could come back hot from his season-ending ACL tear, play his tail off and prove to the Cardinals new coaching staff and front office that he’s the guy they want to build around,” wrote Graziano. “He could struggle to come back and prompt the new Cards leadership to look for its franchise QB next offseason.”

It’s hard to believe the job of Murray, a two-time Pro Bowler, is on the line after he signed a five-year extension worth $230.5M last offseason. However, he and the Cardinals were a major disappointment in 2022. Arizona finished with the third-worst record (4-13) in the NFL, and Murray recorded a 3-8 starting record and logged career lows in passer rating (87.2) and passing yards per game (215.3) in 11 games.

Also, it isn’t clear when the QB will return from his ACL injury. “He’s a long way away, but we don’t play for a long time, either,” Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon recently said via Eric Edholm of NFL.com. Arizona showed it’s in rebuilding mode this offseason. Since Murray has regressed, the Cardinals may feel they should move on from him.

Another wrinkle here is that Arizona is the favorite to land the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, per Seth Walder of ESPN, and it’s a strong QB class. If the Cardinals land the top pick, they could select 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams. The bottom line is that Murray must bounce back next season; otherwise, the 25-year-old’s future in Arizona is uncertain.

Insider Speculates Potential Departure of Two-Time Pro Bowler from Cardinals

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray’s future in Arizona is at stake next season. After a disappointing 2022 season, Murray’s potential outcomes vary widely. He could come back strong from his ACL tear, prove himself to the new coaching staff, and secure his place as the team’s franchise quarterback. On the other hand, if he struggles to recover, the Cardinals may start looking for a new quarterback. Murray’s performance declined last season, and the Cardinals are currently in rebuilding mode. Additionally, if they secure the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, they could potentially select a new quarterback. Murray must bounce back next season to secure his future in Arizona.
