How budding ‘friendship’ between QB and WR could spark Bears offense

Bears wide receiver D.J. Moore and quarterback Justin Fields are forming a strong connection.

“It looks like they got that chemistry going very fast, earlier than I expected,” Chicago safety Jaquan Brisker said of Moore and Fields, per Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Chicago. “They look like they best friends.”

Moore and Fields developing synergy is what the Bears need to ignite their passing offense. Last season, Chicago finished last in passing yards (2,219).

The Bears struggled because none of their wide receivers emerged as a bonafide No. 1 target. Tight end Cole Kmet led the team in major receiving categories, only logging 50 receptions for 544 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Bears WR problems limited Fields’ ability to grow into a premier passer. In 15 games, he threw 17 TDs, 11 interceptions and completed 60.4 percent of his passes, third to last in the league.

Chicago dealt the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to Carolina to acquire Moore. Per Alex Shapiro of NBC Sports Chicago, Bears GM Ryan Poles recently said he was “over the moon” about the trade.

Moore should provide the offensive juice Chicago needs. The 26-year-old wideout has logged 1,000 yards or more three times in five seasons. Also, he recorded a career-high seven receiving TDs in 17 games last season.

Additionally, Moore will give Fields a target he can depend on, helping him become a franchise QB that the Bears can continue to build around.

The combination of Moore and Fields could help Chicago rebound into the playoffs after two consecutive seasons without a postseason appearance.
