Study: NFL players are 4 times more likely to die from neurodegenerative disease

Study Reveals NFL Players Are Four Times More Susceptible to Neurodegenerative Diseases

A study by Mass General Brigham, Boston University, and the Concussion & CTE Foundation reveals that NFL players are four times more likely to die from neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s compared to the general population. Analyzing 19,824 players from 1960 to 2019, researchers found death rates were notably higher for younger players, particularly skill-position players. While NFL players had lower rates of other diseases, the prevalence of neurodegenerative conditions is likely linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The study emphasizes the need for changes in contact sports practices to reduce head trauma exposure.
