Him review – Jordan Peele-produced football horror is a disappointing fumble

Review: Him – Jordan Peele’s football horror film fumbles and disappoints

In the film “Him,” produced by Jordan Peele, a psychological splatter film in the vein of “Us,” the traditional feel-good formula of American sports movies is challenged. The protagonist, Cameron Cade, a college quarterback, faces a serious head injury that jeopardizes his future in football. As he trains at a desert compound belonging to Marlon Wayans’s character, the flaws and brutality of the football industry are highlighted. The film critiques the privilege and leverage enjoyed by quarterbacks, the physical toll of the sport, and the conflation of white Christian values and American jingoism in football. Despite some interesting commentary, “Him” ultimately falls short in delivering a coherent critique of the football industry.
