Retired N.F.L. Athletes to Maintain Disability Benefits
The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) has reached an agreement with the league to preserve the disability benefits of hundreds of former players. Negotiated by the new executive director, Lloyd Howell, the deal will allow players deemed totally and permanently disabled by the Social Security Administration to retain payments from the league’s plan as well as benefits from the federal government. However, going forward, any player deemed disabled by a doctor for the Social Security Administration will have their NFL benefits reduced by the amount they receive from the government. The agreement came three months before players were set to lose thousands of dollars a month in payments.
