On This Day in History: November 9, The Holocaust Commences with the Looting of Jewish Stores and Homes
Today is Sunday, November 9, 2025, the 313th day of the year with 52 days remaining. In 1938, Kristallnacht, a violent Nazi pogrom against Jews in Germany and Austria, occurred. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt became the first sitting U.S. president to travel abroad to observe the construction of the Panama Canal. Other significant events on this date include the formation of the Committee for Industrial Organization in 1935, the start of the great Northeast blackout in 1965, and the approval of resolutions condemning apartheid in South Africa by the U.N. General Assembly in 1976. In 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall occurred, allowing citizens to travel freely between East and West Germany.
