The US draws down troops on NATO’s eastern flank as Europe frets about a security vacuum

European Concerns Mount as US Reduces Troop Presence on NATO’s Eastern Border

The United States has informed NATO allies of plans to scale back troop presence along Europe’s eastern border with Ukraine to focus on other security priorities worldwide. The move, confirmed by the U.S. Army, is not a sign of decreased commitment to NATO. Around 80,000-100,000 U.S. troops are usually in Europe for operations and exercises. NATO has recently increased defensive posture on its eastern flank due to Russian aggression. The U.S. decision will end the rotation of a brigade in Europe, but around 1,000 troops will remain stationed in Romania. NATO officials reassure that the adjustment will not change the overall security environment in Europe.
