The Pope appoints new leader for New Orleans archdiocese following sex abuse settlement

Pope Leo XIV appointed Bishop James Checchio as the coadjutor bishop of New Orleans to succeed Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond, who will retire after finalizing a $230 million settlement for clergy sexual abuse survivors. Checchio, who previously handled sexual misconduct allegations in Metuchen, New Jersey, expressed gratitude and readiness to serve. Aymond welcomed Checchio and plans to stay until the bankruptcy is settled. The New Orleans archdiocese faced bankruptcy in 2020 to address abuse claims efficiently. Survivors have until late October to approve the settlement. Aymond resisted calls for resignation amidst the abuse scandal, prompting an FBI investigation.
