On this day in history: September 16, tragedy strikes at Sabra and Shatila refugee camps
On September 16, 1982, a massacre in Beirut’s Sabra and Shatila refugee camps saw over 1,300 Palestinians killed by Christian Phalange militiamen. In history, the Mexican War of Independence began in 1810, General Motors was founded in 1908, and the largest US land run took place in 1893. In 1966, the Metropolitan Opera opened at Lincoln Center, and in 1974, President Gerald Ford announced an amnesty program for Vietnam war deserters. O.J. Simpson was arrested in 2007 for armed robbery, and in 2013, a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard killed 12. Today George Chakiris, Ed Begley Jr., and Henry Louis Gates Jr. celebrate birthdays.
