Gov. approves funds for new Browns stadium

Governor Grants Funding for Construction of New Browns Stadium

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has signed a $60 billion budget that sets aside $600 million in unclaimed funds for a new Cleveland Browns stadium. The Haslam Sports Group, owner of the Browns, requested help to build a $2.4 billion domed stadium in suburban Brook Park. The budget also included changes to the state’s “Art Modell Law,” applying only if a sports team attempts to move out of Ohio. Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb expressed disappointment with the budget, stating it will divert economic activity from downtown. Lawmakers, mostly Democrats, have criticized the proposal as a gift to the team’s owners and have threatened legal action.
