49ers make special teams change by releasing punter, signing veteran

49ers shake up special teams by cutting punter and adding veteran player

The San Francisco 49ers signed veteran punter Thomas Morstead to a one-year deal, cutting Mitch Wishnowsky to make room for him on the roster. Morstead, a former fifth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints, spent 12 seasons with them before playing for the Jets, Falcons, and Dolphins. Last season, Morstead averaged 47.2 yards per punt with an 11.1% touchback rate. Wishnowsky, who Morstead is replacing, averaged 45.2 yards per punt but missed time due to a back injury. Morstead shared a photo outside Levi’s Stadium, showing his excitement about joining the 49ers.
