Linebacker Steve Kiner, known for his candor about drug use, passes away at age 77
Steve Kiner, a former All-American linebacker at the University of Tennessee and player for three NFL teams, passed away at 77 due to Alzheimer’s disease possibly caused by concussions sustained during his playing days. Despite being undersized for a linebacker, Kiner was known for his aggressive style of play. He struggled with drug addiction throughout his career, experimenting with various substances. After retiring from the NFL, Kiner pursued a career in health care and worked in psychiatric services. He exhibited symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, likely due to the numerous concussions he suffered during his football career. Kiner is survived by his wife, brother, daughters, grandchildren, and sisters.
