Chargers part ways with five-time Pro Bowler Joey Bosa after nine seasons in Los Angeles
Joey Bosa was released by the Los Angeles Chargers after nine seasons due to his large salary cap number and injury history, saving the team $25.36m in cap space. Bosa was the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft and was named NFL defensive rookie of the year. His five-year extension in 2020 made him the league’s highest-paid defensive player at the time. Bosa played in 14 games last season with only five sacks due to hip and back injuries. The Chargers will focus on re-signing Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu will move into a starting spot with Bosa’s departure. Bosa’s father, John, was also an NFL player and Bosa spoke about the possibility of playing with his brother, Nick, on the San Francisco 49ers.
