NFL exploring potential changes to regular season overtime rules
The NFL is considering adjusting regular-season overtime rules to reduce the advantage of the team winning the coin toss. One suggestion is to mirror postseason overtime rules, where each team has a chance to possess the ball and end in a tie. In 2024, teams winning the coin toss won 12 out of 16 regular-season overtime games. The current rules give the toss-winning team a significant advantage. The NFL changed overtime rules in 2017 from 15 to 10 minutes, with the toss-winning team winning 59.7% of games. Previous rules had a more equitable win percentage. Owners approved changes to postseason OT rules in 2022 but only for the postseason.
