Legendary Detroit Lions coach Joe Schmidt dies at 92 after leading team to two NFL championships

Hall of Fame linebacker Joe Schmidt, who helped the Detroit Lions win NFL championships in 1953 and 1957, has passed away at the age of 92. Schmidt played his entire career with the Lions from 1953 to 1965 and was an eight-time All-Pro. He was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1973. Schmidt later coached the Lions from 1967 to 1972. Known for his speed, savvy, and tackling ability, Schmidt was elected to the Pro Bowl 10 times. He was also part of the NFL’s All-Time Team in 2019. Despite being an undersized seventh-round draft pick, Schmidt left a lasting legacy in football.
