Former running back Wood receives life sentence for death of five-year-old
Former professional football player Cierre Wood was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for the murder of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter in April 2019. Wood pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse, with additional charges being dismissed as part of a plea agreement. The child’s mother, Amy Taylor, also pleaded guilty to similar charges. The child, La’Rayah Davis, died of blunt force injuries. Wood, who played for the University of Notre Dame and briefly in the NFL and CFL, entered an Alford plea, allowing him to claim innocence while admitting guilt.
