NFL Trials Preseason Hawk-Eye Technology to Phase Out ‘Chain Gangs’
The NFL is testing Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology to replace the chain gang for measuring the line to gain, with potential implementation as early as next season. The system is being installed and calibrated in stadiums to ensure accuracy across various dimensions and ages of the venues. Sony’s expanding sports technology will also include a new coach’s sideline headset in 2025. Hawk-Eye tracking services use cameras to track players, officials, and the ball, providing instant notifications to officials if a first down is gained. The technology aims to reduce time and provide precise measurements, while the traditional chain method will remain as a backup.
