Ex-No. 1 pick Russell fired as coach, faces suit

Former No. 1 pick Russell terminated as coach and sued

In June 2024, former NFL player JaMarcus Russell was fired as a volunteer assistant coach at Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama. He is facing a lawsuit for allegedly taking a $74,000 check meant as a donation for the school’s football team, which was never received. Russell reportedly deposited the check and withdrew $55,000. Due to these allegations, he is not allowed on campus and was told he is not welcome at a recent football team event. Russell, a former No. 1 NFL draft pick, had a short-lived professional career and is considered one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.
