Latest Violence Mars Sports Celebration in Kansas City with Shooting
Several recent championship celebrations have been marred by shootings, including the N.B.A. championship rally for the Toronto Raptors in 2019, the Dodgers’ World Series victory celebration in 2020, and the Super Bowl victory parade in Kansas City in 2022, which resulted in one woman’s death and 22 others injured. Large crowds at sporting events can lead to increased violence. Crowds at sporting events significantly exceed the typical norms in society – leading to issues of security, alcohol, and weather-related factors contributing to violence. Research shows that there is indeed a slight increase in violent crimes and assaults in locations in and around sports venues on game days.
