New trial scheduled to commence for the fatal shooting of Super Bowl champion Will Smith
The retrial for Cardell Hayes, who fatally shot former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith in 2016, is set to begin. Hayes claimed self-defense in the shooting, resulting in Smith’s death and wounding his wife, but was convicted of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter; however, his conviction was reversed due to a non-unanimous jury. Hayes has repeatedly delayed retrial for various reasons, including the Covid-19 pandemic. Smith was a popular member of the Saints team who helped carry the team to success, while Hayes was a former semi-pro football player and owns a tow truck business.
