For NFL players, “honor your contract” is misplaced

Misguided Placement of “Honor Your Contract” for NFL Players

NFL players who decide to take a stand for better contracts often face criticism from fans and media, who tell them to “honor their contract.” However, it’s not that simple. NFL players have two contracts: the one with their team and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. The CBA grants players certain rights, such as the ability to hold out from training camp. Additionally, player contracts in the NFL are one-way streets, with the team having the power to cut a player while the player is bound to the team. This unequal system favors the teams and compels players to sign contracts they wouldn’t in a normal employment environment. So, when a player exercises his rights under the CBA, he is not violating his contract but rather utilizing the limited options available to him in a system that heavily favors the employers.
