Las Vegas Raiders fans received perhaps the most ominous update yet on star running back Josh Jacobs on Monday morning.
It was reported last week that Jacobs and the Raiders weren’t close to reaching an agreement on a new contract extension ahead of the franchise tag deadline. Because last year’s NFL rushing champion has yet to sign his one-year, $10.1M franchise tender, he can sit out training camp and avoid fines.
Vic Tafur of The Athletic went as far as to say last week that talks between the two sides were “dead in the water” until recently.
Jacobs may have been “leaving Las Vegas” on Monday morning, but he also said in February that he had the team’s “seal tatted on” and that Sin City was “definitely a place (he wants) to be.” The 25-year-old also said at the time that he recently bought a house in Vegas.
Jacobs posted career highs in rushing attempts (340), rushing yards (1,653), receiving yards (400), touches (league-high 393) and yards from scrimmage (league-high 2,053), while matching his high mark in rushing touchdowns (12) and targets (64) as well. He earned his second Pro Bowl honor and was named first-team All-Pro for the first time across his four-year career.
A former first-round pick out of the University of Alabama, Jacobs co-led the Raiders all last season with wideout Davante Adams. He rushed for over 100 yards in a game six times last year and scored multiple touchdowns on three occasions.
Jacobs put up the monster numbers at a critical time, as Las Vegas declined his fifth-year option last offseason.
If the two parties don’t come to a conclusion soon, the Raiders’ ground game could seriously suffer in 2023. The projected backup is 2022 fourth-round pick Zamir White, who barely played last year, finishing with 17 carries for 70 scoreless yards.
