Former Packers star signals he’s uncertain about team’s QB transition

A former Packers star hinted that’s he skeptical about Green Bay having a smooth transition at quarterback after they dealt Aaron Rodgers to the Jets earlier this offseason.

“I’m kind of on a wait-and-see approach,” former Green Bay linebacker and Super Bowl champion Clay Matthews recently said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I know Packers fans have had it so good, especially the transition from Favre to Rodgers. Now, I’m assuming many are probably thinking it’s just going to be hunky-dory for the next 15 years.”

Green Bay’s QB luck has been exceptional. In 2008, Rodgers replaced Favre, a Super Bowl champion and three-time MVP. He exceeded expectations, winning four MVPs and a Super Bowl in 15 seasons as the Packers starter.

Consequently, the success of both QBs has raised the bar for Jordan Love. However, expecting the 24-year-old to develop into a player of the same caliber immediately is unrealistic. He’s only played in 10 games in three seasons, completing 60.2 percent of passes and posting a 79.7 passer rating. He’s also thrown the same amount of interceptions and TDs (three).

The Green Bay team Love’s taking over isn’t as strong as the one Rodgers inherited, either. In 2022 the Packers went 8-9 and missed the playoffs. In 2007, Green Bay posted a 13-3 record and earned an NFC championship berth.

The Packers have the worst NFC North title odds in 2023, too, per OddsChecker. So don’t be surprised if Love struggles during his first season as a starter.

Plus, inexperienced QBs need time to develop. For example, Rodgers went 6-10 and threw a career-high 13 interceptions in his first season as a full-time starter. So the Packers must exercise patience before they determine Love’s legitimacy as a successor.

Former Packers Star Expresses Uncertainty Regarding Team’s Quarterback Transition

Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews expressed skepticism about the smooth transition at quarterback after the team traded Aaron Rodgers. Matthews acknowledged that Packers fans had been fortunate with the successful transition from Brett Favre to Rodgers but cautioned against assuming it would be the same this time. He pointed out that Rodgers’ success had set high expectations for Jordan Love, who has limited experience and is stepping into a weaker team than Rodgers did. The Packers also have the worst NFC North title odds for 2023, suggesting Love may struggle in his first season as a starter.
