Federal judge rules Trump can’t require citizenship proof on the federal voting form

Federal judge decides Trump cannot demand proof of citizenship on federal voting form

A federal judge ruled that President Trump’s request to add a proof of citizenship requirement to the federal voter registration form is unconstitutional and cannot be enforced. The judge sided with Democratic and civil rights groups, stating that the President lacks the authority to make such changes as the responsibility for election regulation lies with the States and Congress. The ruling prevents the proof-of-citizenship requirement from going into effect and prohibits the U.S. Election Assistance Commission from taking action to add it to the federal voter form. Multiple lawsuits continue to challenge Trump’s executive order on election procedures.
